Acoustic excitation of superharmonic capillary waves on a gas-liquid meniscus
Contact:Jie Xu
The effects of ultrasound on the dynamics of an air-water meniscus in a planar micro-geometry are investigated experimentally.
-
Traveling waves
With low excitation intensities, traveling waves are found at the meniscus. Crests A and B are moving towards the center of symmetry of the meniscus.

-
Standing waves
Increasing the actuation intensity, standing waves with larger amplitude appear, which can be subharmonic, harmonic or superharmonic of the excitation frequecny. To the best of knowledge, this is the first time that superharmonic waves are observed on a gas-liquid interface.
