Gerard A. Ateshian is professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering at Columbia University and director of the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Laboratory. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia in 1991. His current research interests include stereophotogrammetry, magnetic resonance imaging; computed tomography techniques for reconstruction of musculoskeletal anatomy; geometric modeling, surface-fitting; curvature analysis of diarthrodial joint articular surfaces; experimental determination of diarthrodial joint kinematics; contact theoretical analysis of contact mechanics of soft porous-hydrated biphasic cartilage layers; experimental and theoretical analysis of articular cartilage mechanics under finite deformation; theoretical and experimental analysis of cartilage lubrication; modeling of diarthrodial joints; biomechanics of the knee, shoulder, and hand; computer-aided surgical planning; cartilage tissue engineering and bioreactor design; systems analysis of cartilage biosynthesis and growth.
